How SIP growth works

A Systematic Investment Plan invests a fixed sum every month into a mutual fund. Because markets move, your fixed amount buys more units when prices are low and fewer when prices are high — this averaging is the core appeal of SIPs.

Over long periods, compounding does the heavy lifting: in the later years, growth on past growth can exceed your fresh contributions. That is why starting early usually matters more than investing big.

SIP questions, answered

What is a good expected return to assume for SIP?

Many planners use 10–12% a year for long-term equity SIPs as an illustration, but actual returns vary and are never guaranteed. Use a conservative number when planning.

Is SIP better than a lump sum investment?

Neither is universally better. SIPs spread investments over time, which suits salaried investors and smooths market ups and downs; lump sums can win if markets rise steadily, but carry timing risk.

Are SIP returns guaranteed?

No. SIPs invest in market-linked mutual funds, so returns move with the market. This calculator shows a projection at your assumed return, not a promise.
