How RD growth works
A recurring deposit turns a monthly habit into a lump sum: you deposit a fixed amount every month, and the bank compounds interest quarterly. Earlier deposits earn for longer, so starting early matters even with small amounts.
Indian banks compound RD interest quarterly. This calculator converts that into an effective monthly rate, which matches bank figures closely enough for planning.
RD questions, answered
RD vs FD — which is better?
FD suits a lump sum you already have; RD suits building savings month by month from income. At the same rate and tenure, an FD of the full amount earns more because the whole sum compounds from day one.
What happens if I miss an RD instalment?
Most banks charge a small penalty per missed instalment (often around ₹10 per ₹100 of instalment). Repeated misses can lead the bank to close the RD and pay savings-account interest instead.
Is RD interest taxable?
Yes. RD interest is taxable as per your income slab, and TDS applies when interest crosses the threshold in a financial year.
