How FD growth works

A fixed deposit earns compound interest: each compounding period, the interest is added to your balance, and the next period's interest is calculated on the bigger sum. Quarterly compounding — the most common for Indian bank FDs — is the default here.

The rate you see is per year, but compounding frequency decides how hard it works. Monthly compounding on the same rate gives a slightly higher maturity value than yearly compounding.

FD questions, answered

What is compounding frequency in FD?

It is how often the bank adds interest to your deposit — yearly, half-yearly, quarterly or monthly. More frequent compounding gives a slightly higher maturity value at the same rate.

Is FD interest taxable?

Yes, FD interest is taxable as per your income slab in India. Banks also deduct TDS if your interest crosses the threshold in a financial year.

Can I break an FD before maturity?

Usually yes, but most banks charge a premature-withdrawal penalty (often around 1%) and pay interest at a lower rate for the period completed.
